Another classic facet of this divide centres on making promises or commitments and not delivering on them. Vanessa Hall, the author of The Truth about Trust in Business, recognises expectations, needs and promises as the three key elements of trust. When promises, whether implicit and explicit, are not met, trust is eroded or broken. Confirming this, research she conducted in Australia found that 65% of the respondents said that keeping promises was the most important way for businesses to build trust (Hall, 2009:49). Given how obvious this is, one wonders why so many people will make promises to colleagues or clients that they are not able to or do not intend to keep when they know the cost of not meeting those commitments.
